The Firehouse Grill has been serving great food from downtown Nanaimo’s historic firehall for over a decade. The restaurant has an undeniably eccentric style that is influenced as much by the genuine history of the building as it is the creative genius of its head chef. Located in the heart of our city, the old firehall was built in 1893 to support Nanaimo as it slowly grew into a thriving community. The Firehall was decommissioned in 1967, and has remained a unique and sought after venue ever since.
BEHIND THE MAGIC
A foodie, a connoisseur, and a family man, Mike Atherton is an island native but has called Nanaimo home for more than forty years. Having started the Firehouse Grill with nothing more than a vision and the support of his family and close friends, Mike can now delight in giving back to the community as the proud proprietor of Nanaimo's premier fusion restaurant. Mike spends as much of his free time as he can with his wife, three wonderful children, and extended family all here in Nanaimo.
With a love for all things cajun and his two beautiful daughters, Chef Dean has created a family-friendly menu that both plays into the fiery influence of the old firehall and accents the fresh flavours of the West Coast. Born and raised in Calgary and a Red-Seal chef, Dean moved out to Vancouver Island in the late 2000's and started the Firehouse Grill with local entrepreneur Mike Atherton. His and colleagues menus helped make the restaurant a local favourite, and has been serving fantastic food ever since!
Mel is another island native, proud mother of one, and has known Mike and Dean for nearly twenty years as both a friend and colleague. She got her start managing here in Nanaimo in the retail industry, but found her passion in mixing drinks and providing excellent service to every customer that walks through our doors. She has been a fundamental pillar of the Firehouse Family for the last nine years, doing everything there is to do from managing a diverse crew of employees right down to offering a friendly smile to every customer that walks in.
Kayla has worked her way through the ranks of the service industry and the Firehouse Grill for nearly ten years, climbing past hostess to bartender, server, and now manager. She is currently working on her Master's of Community Planning at Vancouver Island University while continuing to be a force for positivity here at the restaurant. In her fleeting moments of spare time, Kayla enjoys the beauty of the island as well as spending time with her pooch, Kuma.
The Nanaimo No.2 Firehall (the first one burnt down) is a nationally recognized historic site and remains one of downtown Nanaimo's most characteristic buildings, even now more than a century later!
